Formation of Uttarakhand State

The creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state was the culmination of decades of passionate struggle by its hill communities. The people of the mountainous districts felt neglected within the plains-dominated state of Uttar Pradesh. The agitation gathered momentum in the 1990s, led by the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and driven by youth, women, and common people across Garhwal and Kumaon. The tragic October 1994 Rampur Tiraha incident, in which peaceful protesters were brutally attacked by police, became a defining moment that only strengthened the movement's resolve. After years of sustained demonstrations, hunger strikes, and political lobbying, the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act was passed in 2000. Uttarakhand was born — initially as 'Uttaranchal,' a name later changed to Uttarakhand in 2007 to honour the region's traditional identity.
